Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships 2027–28 for Pakistan
Swiss Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS/ESKAS) / SERI
Applications are open for the Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships 2027–28 for Pakistani researchers. HEC’s Pakistan announcement lists two categories: a one-year Research Scholarship for doctoral candidates undertaking a research stay in Switzerland and a three-year PhD Scholarship. The Pakistan application deadline published by HEC is 31 October 2026. HEC is only advertising the opportunity; applications are submitted directly through the Swiss GO ESKAS portal.
What this programme provides
The Swiss official 2027–28 guidance states a scholarship amount of CHF 2,450 per month for research fellowships and PhD scholarships to cover basic living expenses for one person. The Swiss government also states that applications are free; country and award conditions should be checked in the current official package before relying on any additional benefit.
Eligibility
- For Pakistan, use only the categories listed in the HEC announcement: one-year Research Scholarship and three-year PhD Scholarship.
- For research/PhD scholarships, hold a Master’s degree or equivalent by 31 July 2027 (30 June 2027 for ETH Zurich under the Swiss guidance).
- Be born after 31 December 1991 under the 2027–28 research/PhD eligibility rules.
- Prepare a detailed research plan with timeline and milestones.
- Secure an academic supervisor in Switzerland who is willing to support the project and provide the required support letter and short CV.
- If already residing in Switzerland, meet the Swiss residence timing rule; the 2027–28 guidance says entry must not be earlier than 1 August 2026.
- For a research fellowship, be pursuing a PhD in the home country; for a PhD scholarship, satisfy the host institution’s doctoral admission/supervision route.

- For research fellowships, a short CV of the academic supervisor at the home university.
- For PhD applicants using a graduate-school route where applicable, proof of admission to the doctoral school together with the required supervisor support.
- Email addresses of two professors in the relevant field so the online system can request recommendation letters.

- Passport copy; dual citizens should follow the Swiss instruction to submit both passports.
- Residence permit/registration confirmation if already living in Switzerland.
How to apply
- 1Confirm that the Pakistan category you want is available and that you meet the research or PhD eligibility rules.
- 2Identify a suitable Swiss academic supervisor early; the Swiss authorities state that applicants are responsible for finding their own supervisor and that this can take weeks or months.
- 3Prepare the research plan, motivation letter, CV, transcripts and supervisor support material before starting the final submission.
- 4Register in the Swiss Grants Online (GO ESKAS) application system.
- 5Complete and submit the application online through GO ESKAS. The Swiss guidance says not to send applications by email or on paper.
- 6For Pakistan, submit before the HEC-announced date of 31 October 2026; because HEC’s notice does not state a closing time, do not wait until the last day.
- 7Monitor communication from the Swiss authorities/mission. HEC is not handling selection or funding for this award.
Detailed information
Pakistan categories for 2027–28
HEC’s Pakistan announcement lists a one-year Research Scholarship for doctoral candidates seeking a research stay in Switzerland and a three-year PhD Scholarship. The Swiss authorities separately explain that postdoctoral scholarships are no longer offered from the 2027/28 academic year.
Deadline and application route
HEC publishes 31 October 2026 as the Pakistan deadline. Applications are made through the Swiss GO ESKAS portal, not through HEC. Swiss guidance says applications should not be sent by email or on paper. Because HEC’s notice gives the date but no closing time, applicants should submit well before the last day.
Monthly scholarship amount
The Swiss 2027–28 guidance states CHF 2,450 per month for research fellowships and PhD scholarships to cover basic living expenses for one person. The scholarship is not treated as a salary. Swiss authorities also increased the one-off housing allowance to CHF 600 from 2026 and continue health/accident insurance support for qualifying non-EU/EFTA scholars under the applicable rules.
Academic supervisor is essential
Every research/PhD application requires an academic supervisor in Switzerland who is willing to supervise the project and provide a support letter. Applicants must find the supervisor themselves. The Swiss FAQ recommends targeted, well-prepared contact and notes that the search can take weeks or months.
Research fellowship vs PhD scholarship
The research fellowship is designed for researchers pursuing a PhD in their home country and normally lasts 6–12 months, with no extension. The PhD scholarship supports full-time doctoral research and can be renewed for up to 36 months subject to progress and conditions.
Age and degree timing
For both research and PhD scholarships in the 2027–28 guidance, applicants must be born after 31 December 1991 and complete a Master’s degree or equivalent by 31 July 2027, with a 30 June 2027 date stated for ETH Zurich.
What makes a strong application
The Federal Commission assesses candidate profile, quality/originality and methodology of the research project, and the quality of supervision plus potential for future cooperation. A clear research question, realistic timeline and genuine fit with the Swiss supervisor’s work are therefore central.
HEC’s role is limited
HEC explicitly states that it is only advertising the opportunity. Applicants apply directly through the Swiss system and queries should go to the relevant Swiss mission/institution. HEC has no financial liability for this scholarship.
Fraud warning
Swiss authorities warn about fake scholarship emails and requests for money. The official application is free. Do not send money for visa/social-insurance claims to anyone presenting an unsolicited 'Swiss Government scholarship' offer.
